Is It Worth It To Visit Costa Brava in June?

We recently got back from visiting the Costa Brava in June, where we had a great time swimming in gorgeous coves, exploring quaint medieval villages, and staying at one of the dreamiest places you’ll ever find (think stunning restored Spanish farmhouse with a pool in a medieval village…click here to see it 😍).

We stayed at Can Bassa, the dreamiest restored farmhouse with cottages & a pool

This guide is to let you in on the pros and cons of visiting Costa Brava, Spain in June (there are a couple of cons, although mostly pros) and to give you a sneak peek into what a trip to the Costa Brava in June can look like.

Is June A Good Time To Visit The Costa Brava Spain

Yes! June is a great time to visit Costa Brava and one of the top months I’d recommend.

Family walks along cobblestone path next to stone buildings in Pals, Costa Brava in Spain
Medevial village of Pals

We always plan our trips to Spain in the late spring/early summer or the early fall to avoid the heat, crowds, and highest prices that come with peak July & August travel.

PROS OF VISITING COSTA BRAVA IN JUNE

  • Perfect sunny weather for swimming that’s not usually as hot as July or August (although June heatwaves have become more common in recent years)
  • Less crowded than July/August
  • Slightly less expensive accommodation options (especially if you visit the first week of June)

CONS OF VISITING COSTA BRAVA IN JUNE

  • The sea is still warming up from the winter, so it can feel a bit chilly. This didn’t bother us too much, but sometimes we did wish it was a bit warmer. The best way to combat this is to visit in the opposite shoulder season of late September, when the weather is still great, but the sea has had all summer to warm up.

What Is The Weather in Costa Brava in June?

Costa Brava weather in June is pretty perfect for relaxing at the beach and soaking up some sun. The average high temperature in June is 82° F with an average low of 58° F.

In comparison, the average high temp in July is 87° F and in August 88° F.

Calella de Palafrugell

We visited Costa Brava from June 17th to 23rd, and the high temps ranged from 86° F to 93° F.

You can see that what we experienced is higher than is generally expected; however, it seems that June heatwaves are becoming more common in recent years, which is something to keep in mind.

My favorite way to research the weather of a destination is to use the website Time and Date. On Time and Date, you input your destination and can see the exact past weather on any given day of any given year- it’s amazing!

You do this by visiting timeanddate.com, clicking on weather, then worldwide, inputting the destination, clicking yesterday/past weather, and then selecting the dates you want to see.

If you want to see the average weather rather than the exact historical weather, click on climate (averages).

I find it so helpful to input the travel dates I’m considering to see not only the overall average weather but the exact weather for the last many years. It really helps with my decision-making.

I’ll usually look at the overall average weather followed by inputting a few specific days of the month over the last five years to see what the recent weather has been.

Can You Swim in Costa Brava in June?

Definitely! We swam almost every day during our visit to the Costa Brava in mid-June.

The weather is plenty sunny and warm for swimming (average in the 80°s F) the only downside is that the sea is still warming up from the winter.

In June, the sea temperature is generally around 70° F (getting warmer as the month goes on), compared to a cozier 75° F to 77° F in July and August.

When we visited in June, there were times we wished the sea was a bit warmer. But overall, it didn’t stop us (and everyone else) from swimming.

I think the perfect compromise is to visit in September when the weather is still great, the crowds are fewer, and the sea is warmed up to about 74° F.

What To Wear When Visiting Costa Brava in June

Your wardrobe for Costa Brava in June can be full-on summer-holiday wear of linen pants, sundresses, tank tops, sandals, and whatever other summery outfits you’ve been waiting to wear.

The sun is out, the temps are hot, and you want to wear whatever will keep you cool and comfortable.

We never needed a jacket in the evenings or mornings- it was always plenty warm.

While not totally necessary, water shoes would be a big plus.

Almost all of the beaches in Costa Brava have grainy sand at best (feels like an intense exfoliation) but many also have small pebbly beaches.

Aiguablava Beach is one of the only beaches with super soft sand. We had Tevas, which were somewhat helpful, but the little rocks would get stuck under our feet (which was painful and annoying).

Things To Do in Costa Brava in June

  • Explore gorgeous coves and beaches. Some of are favorites are Tamariu Beach (it has a diving board from the rocks!), Aiguablava (one of the only beaches with soft sand) and Calella de Palafrugell (beautiful whitewashed fishing village lined by linked coves and beaches)
  • Book this private Boat Trip with Snorkeling in picturesque Costa Brava coves. You get to snorkel, use SUPs, and even have a delicious snack. Click here to read the glowing reviews on Get Your Guide.
  • Wander stunning medieval villages (great to do in June when the weather usually isn’t as oppressively hot as it can get in July or August). We enjoyed the villages of Vila Vella in Tossa de Mar and also Pals. Plus we stayed in the most stunning, remote medieval village in a restored 15th-century farmhouse called Can Bassa. Click here to see photos of where we stayed and read about it- it was a highlight of our time in the Costa Brava 😍.
  • Book a guided tour of the Cala Del Moli Via Ferrata – climb on iron rungs and ladders on the cliff over the sea while being protected by a harness and rope. Click here to read reviews and check availability.

  • Visit beautiful botanical gardens overlooking the sea. Two popular ones are Jardí Botànic Marimurtra and Jardíns de Cap Roig.
  • Spend some time in Barcelona. Barcelona is only 1.5 hours from the Costa Brava, making it the perfect addition to the beginning or end of your trip. You can even book a day trip from Barcelona to the Costa Brava like this one that includes kayaking, snorkeling and cliff jumping (the reviews are amazing, and it sounds like an amazing way to get a taste of the Costa Brava).

St. John’s Eve On June 23rd in Costa Brava

Each year, St. John’s Eve on June 23rd is a night of bonfires on beaches and MASSIVE amounts of fireworks in town on the Costa Brava (and other areas of Spain).

We were in Barcelona on St. John’s Eve, and there were fireworks going off literally all night long.

It’s good to keep this date in mind in case you’d like to experience fun local traditions. Or conversely, maybe you’d like to steer clear of the extra crowds and noise.

Click here to read more about the festival and how it’s celebrated in Costa Brava.

Other Good Times To Visit Costa Brava

The best months to visit the Costa Brava (in my opinion) are either late May through June or September.

Kayaking at Aiguablava Beach

In these months, you get great weather and water warm enough for swimming without the peak crowds of July and August.

If we were to do it again, I’d lean towards September instead of June just to have the water a few degrees warmer (which really wasn’t an issue but would’ve been a bonus).
