What It’s Like Visiting Barcelona in June

We recently got back from visiting Barcelona in June, where we played at a fun playground with Sagrada Familia views, took a bike tour all over the city, and took a day trip to the Montserrat monastery.

This guide is to let you in on the pros and cons of choosing June to visit Barcelona, plus what type of weather to expect, typical crowd sizes, and holidays to be aware of (think massive amounts of fireworks all night long).

πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Έ 😍 IN A RUSH? CHECK OUT OUR BARCELONA FAVORITES:

WHERE WE STAYED IN BARCELONA:

πŸ›οΈπŸ˜Flat in Quiet Area With Market, Public Transit & Playgrounds Nearby: I highly recommend where we stayed in Barcelona. Our VRBO was in a lovely area with multiple playgrounds and a supermarket just out the door in a quiet courtyard. Plus public transit (both bus and metro) was just a block away with a fast, easy access to Sagrada Familia and the Gothic Quarter. Since we had a car as part of our greater Costa Brava roadtrip, the free parking and quick access to the freeway made a day trip to Monsterrat so fast and easy.

FAMILY-FRIENDLY BIKE TOUR OF BARCELONA:

🚲 Private, Family-Friendly Bike Tour of Barcelona (With Kid Bikes, Tagalong Bikes and/or Bike Seats!): We LOVED our family bike tour of Barcelona. Our oldest got her own bike, our middle was on a tag-a-long and our youngest in a bike seat and they were all so happy. We got to cycle through SO MANY different areas of the city and see so much more than we would've had we not done the bike tour and our kids were so much happier. I highly recommend!

FAMILY-FRIENDLY TOUR OF SAGRADA FAMILIA:

🎟️ Family-Friendly Sagrada Familia Tour (With Games and Stories!): We didn't get to book this tour because it didn't work with our schedule, but I wish we could've! By not doing a tour we missed out on learning more about Sagrada Familia, however, a traditional tour wouldn't have worked with our young kids- but this family-specific Sagrada Familia tour with games and stories looks amazing.

DAY TRIP TO MONTSERRAT MONASTERY:

⛰️ Montserrat Day Trip with Cable Car and Easy Hike from Barcelona: Get private transportation from Barcelona, take a cable car ride up the mountain, a guided easy hike with monastery views and more! If we were to book a day trip to Montserrat, it'd be this one (we had a car with us so we drove ourselves instead).

DAY TRIP TO COSTA BRAVA:

πŸ‘™ Costa Brava Day Trip From Barcelona With Kayaking, Snorkeling and Cliff Jumping: A perfect way to get a taste of the beauty of the Costa Brava! We spent 6 days in Costa Brava and highly recommend. It's only 1.5 hours from Barcelona! Click here to see this day trip to Costa Brava!

Is June A Good Time To Visit Barcelona, Spain?

June can be a great time to visit Barcelona, depending on what you’re looking for.

Summer activities like swimming at the beach and music festivals are in full swing, but the crowds that come with July and August haven’t yet arrived.

Sagrada Familia

For the best chance of fewer crowds and more manageable temps, I recommend visiting the first 1-2 weeks of June.

If you don’t want to risk visiting Barcelona in 80Β°F + temps (which is increasingly common in June), but also don’t want to visit in the middle of winter, I’d recommend visiting from March through May or mid-September through October.

PROS OF VISITING BARCELONA SPAIN IN JUNE

  • Less crowded than July/August (although still crowded)
  • Plenty warm for visiting a Barcelona beach or taking a Costa Brava roadtrip to more beautiful beaches up the coast
  • Slightly less expensive accommodation options (especially if you visit the first week of June)

CONS OF VISITING BARCELONA SPAIN IN JUNE

  • High chances of experiencing a heatwave with >85Β°F temps (we had this when we visited, and by mid-afternoon the heat felt a bit oppressive and made exploring the city unenjoyable). That being said, it’s overall not as hot as July or August, so June is a better bet in that regard.
  • If you want to take a day trip to Montserrat, the June heat can make it feel too hot to enjoy any of the beautiful hikes in the area unless you get up there first thing in the morning.

PRO OR CON DEPENDING ON YOUR PREFERENCE

  • St. John’s Eve lands on June 23rd each year and is a night of MASSIVE amounts of fireworks in the city and bonfires on the beach (more bonfires are found in Costa Brava than in Barcelona). Some shops are closed, streets are crowded, and fireworks are lit off literally all night long. If you don’t like extra noise/fireworks, you may want to steer clear of this day. However, if you want to experience a fun, local tradition, then June 23rd may be just the day for you!

What Is The Weather in Barcelona in June?

So you may be wondering, ‘Is Barcelona hot in June?’. The average historical high temperatures in Barcelona in June are 78Β° F, with a low of 65Β° F.

Something to keep in mind is that, in recent years, Barcelona seems to be experiencing hotter summers with earlier heat waves.

We were in Barcelona from June 23rd to 27th and experienced highs around 86Β° F each day. And let me tell you… that feels HOT.

We loved our family-friendly bike tour in Barcelona

It can feel okay when the temps are in the mid-70Β°s F, but once it reaches 80Β° F and you are trying to explore the city, the heat feels oppressive.

June is generally slightly better than July or August, which clock in at 83Β°F and 84Β°F, respectively; however, June can also be just as hot.

We chose to visit Barcelona in June because the main purpose of our trip was a beachy Costa Brava roadtrip with kids, and we wanted the weather and water warm enough to enjoy the beach.

However, if the main goal of our trip was just Barcelona or city travel in general, I definitely would’ve chosen to visit in the cooler months of April, May, or October.

The heat really sucks it out of you, especially with the crowds, and I think visiting in a cooler month would be perfect.

My favorite way to research the weather of a destination is to use the website Time and Date. On Time and Date, you input your destination and can see the exact past weather on any given day of any given year- it’s amazing!

You do this by visiting timeanddate.com, clicking on weather, then worldwide, inputting the destination, clicking yesterday/past weather, and then selecting the dates you want to see.

If you want to see the average weather rather than the exact historical weather, click on climate (averages).

I’ll usually look at the overall average weather followed by inputting a few specific days of the month over the last five years to see what the recent weather has been.

I find it so helpful to input the travel dates I’m considering to see not only the overall average weather but the exact weather for the last many years. It really helps with my decision-making

Can You Swim At Beaches in Barcelona in June

Yes! June is a great time to enjoy Barcelona’s beaches.

The weather is hot and sunny, and the sea temperatures are generally around 70Β°F at the beginning of the month and warming as the month goes on.

In June, Barcelona’s beaches also aren’t as crowded as they get in July or August, making it one of the best times to visit.

What To Wear In Barcelona in June

Your wardrobe for Barcelona in June can be full-on summer-holiday wear of linen pants, sundresses, tank tops, sandals, and whatever other summery outfits you’ve been waiting to wear.

Keep in mind that if you want to enter Sagrada Familia, it does have a dress code.

Consider a family-friendly Sagrada Familia tour with games and stories if you’re traveling with kids

The dress code is pretty lenient and mostly indicates that shorts/ dresses must come down to mid-thigh and no see-through clothing or swimwear. You can read more about it here.

Events/Holidays in Barcelona in June

  • St. John’s Eve on June 23rd: Night of massive amounts of fireworks, bonfires, and festivities throughout the city. Many shops will be closed the next day, June 24th. We were in Barcelona on June 23rd, and there were massive amounts of fireworks going off literally ALL NIGHT LONG.
  • Corpus Christi Festival: Occurs on different dates each year. The Corpus Christi Festival is a 700-year-old festival featuring floral carpets in different Barcelona neighborhoods, the iconic ‘dancing egg’ in courtyard fountains, and a festive parade and religious procession. Click here to learn more about it.
  • Music Festivals: The Primavera Sound Festival and SΓ³nar Festival occur in early and mid-June

Other Good Times To Visit Barcelona

Barcelona is one of the most visited cities in all of Europe which means that no matter when you go, it’s always going to be somewhat busy. However, some months are better than others.

For other great months to visit Barcelona for warmer weather but fewer crowds than in July or August, I recommend visiting from April to May or mid-September to October.

And those are the things I wish I knew before visiting Barcelona in June! Let me know in the comments below if you have any questions; I’ll be sure to get back to you!
