Camping Jungfrau Lauterbrunnen Review: Beautiful Bungalows + Affordable Price

Finding affordable (yet nice) accommodations in Switzerland can sometimes feel impossible.

We were visiting Switzerland in September, as a family of five, and were hoping to stay right in Lauterbrunnen.

After hours of researching Airbnbs and hotels, it felt like we most likely wouldn’t be able to afford to stay right in Lauterbrunnen.

I had come across one place that seemed affordable; however, it was called CAMPING Jungfrau so I assumed that it wouldn’t work for us since we weren’t looking to camp.

But then, after getting desperate, I looked more closely at Camping Jungfrau and realized they offer so much more than camping!

Yes, Camping Jungfrau offers tent, RV/van pitches, and hostel rooms; however, they ALSO offer many different styles of bungalows and cabins with kitchens and living spaces that fit from one to six people!\

Not only were the bungalows at Camping Jungfrau really lovely, but they were also AFFORDABLE (literally half the price of most of the places that fit our group in Lauterbrunnen).

We felt like we had found the ultimate hidden gem.

WHERE WE STAYED: 

😍 Bungalows at Camping Jungfrau:We LOVED staying in these 2-bedroom bungalows located RIGHT at the base of Staubbach Falls in Lauterbrunnen. They are super cute, have an amazing view, a full kitchen, and they are AFFORDABLE. 


ACTIVITIES WE BOOKED: 

🛖 Ballenberg Open-Air Museum: This open-air museum was an unexpected surprise and we really enjoyed getting a glimpse into the past. We even got to see how they used to make cheese and have a cheese tasting!

🚲 Lauterbrunnen Valley Bike Rentals: The best way to explore the gorgeous Lauterbrunnen Valley is on bike (in my humble opinion). It's so much more fun than walking and you get to see so much more. They have e-bikes along with kid bikes and trailers!

🧗 Murren Via Ferrata: My husband took this beginner-friendly vai Ferrata tour (while we played at an alpine playground) and it was his favorite experience of the entire trip.

Where is Camping Jungfrau in Lauterbrunnen?

Camping Jungfrau is located in Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland, almost directly at the base of Stubbach Falls (the famous waterfall you see in every photo of Lauterbrunnen).

When you arrive in Lauterbrunnen by train or car, you arrive from the north. Camping Jungfrau is located on the far (not that far) southern end of the village.

From the Lauterbrunnen train station, it’s about a 15-20 minute walk through the picturesque village of Lauterbrunnen to reach Camping Jungfrau.

The entrance to Camping Jungfrau is off the pedestrian-only path that leads through the Lauterbrunnen Valley (cars going to Camping Jungfrau are allowed).

It’s a quiet area, right below a beautiful waterfall that you can see and hear both day and night (they put spotlights on it!).

Price Comparison to Other Places to Stay in Lauterbrunnen

When I was planning our trip to Lauterbrunnen and the Bernese Oberland area with kids, I really wanted to stay right in Lauterbrunnen.

However, it just looked like it was going to cost WAY too much (and I don’t feel like I’m one who skimps on where we stay).

Hours of searching for a place to stay IN Lauterbrunnen (I’m not talking about places a 30-minute drive from Lauterbrunnen) showed me that a two-bedroom unit with a kitchen runs about $500 to $750 PER NIGHT. It’s wild how expensive it is.

However, the two-bedroom bungalow we stayed in at Camping Jungfrau, which was super lovely, had a kitchen and a living space, and was positioned right near the base of Stubbauch Falls, was only $350 per night!

This means that Camping Jungfrau is almost HALF THE PRICE of comparable places to stay in Lauterbrunnen.

You may be thinking that that still seems like a lot; however, for a bungalow that can fit up to six people and is perfectly positioned in Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland, I’ll take it.

I think it’s important to find accommodations with a kitchen because, as you may have heard, eating out in Switzerland is pricey. You’ll be able to save a lot of money by prepping lunches and cooking dinner at home most nights.

Bungalows at Camping Jungfrau

We stayed in the two-bedroom bungalows at Camping Jungfrau and loved them! It was so great to stay in a quiet, peaceful location with stunning mountain views, with just a short walk into Lauterbrunnen village.

The bungalows are one of the largest accommodations you can book at Camping Jungfrau. It fits up to six people between two bedrooms. One bedroom has a large bed for two people and the other bedroom has a large wooden adult-sized bunk bed that fits four people.

I usually really don’t like sleeping in bunk beds, but the bunk beds in the bungalows are made for adults and are super comfortable.

Unfortunately I don’t have a photo of the bunk bed but you can see it here. Just make sure you are looking at the photos for the bungalows.).

The bungalow has a kitchen with an adorable, wooden picnic-style dinner table, a small couch, a coffee table, and a chair.

Out the front door is a patio enclosed with bushes and a small wooden fence. The patio has a table and chairs where you can enjoy a meal with gorgeous mountain views.

The only other cabin that fits up to six people at Camping Jungfrau is the Family Hut. However, the family hut is more of a glamping-style experience with three metal bunkbeds and you are required to bring your own sleeping bags.

Overall, I highly recommend staying at the bungalows at Camping Jungfrau. My other top choice would be the Schiltorn Cabin (for a group of 4-5 people).

If I were traveling with only one other person, I’d choose the Eiger Cabin.

Accommodations at Camping Jungfrau

As I’ve mentioned, we stayed at the two-bedroom bungalows at Camping Jungfrau, so that’s what I can speak to the most. However, there are so many different accommodation options that you’re sure to find something perfect for you.

If we were to stay in another cabin instead of the bungalow, I’d choose the Schiltorn Cottage.

• Eiger Cabin: Cozy cabin with mountain hut aesthetics. One-bedroom with a pullout couch in the living room. Fits 1-4 people.
• Schiltorn Cottage: Adorable cottage with two bedrooms, a kitchen, and a secluded terrace. Fits 1-5 people.
• Bungalow (one of the largest accommodations): This is where we stayed! Beautiful bungalow with two bedrooms (comfortable, adult- sized double bunk bed in one room). Fits 1-6 people.
• Mobile Home Staubbach: Two-bedroom tiny home with a kitchen giving Scandi vibes. Fits 1-4 people.

• Mobile Home Jungfrau: Two-bedroom tiny home with kitchen. One room with a double bed and one room with a bunkbed. Fits 1-4 people.
• Family Hut (one of the largest accommodations): REQUIRES YOU TO BRING SLEEPING BAGS. While this hut is very cute on the outside, the beds are three sets of metal bunk beds, and you are required to bring your own sleeping bags. Pick this hut if you want more of a ‘glamping’ experience. Fits 1-6 people.
• Fox Cabin: Tiny cabin for two people- no kitchen (can use the communal kitchen). Fits 1-2 people.
• Hostel: Hostel with single rooms all to yourself, up to a six-bed dormitory shared with other guests.
• Tent/RV/Van Pitches: All sorts of pitches in the campground area of Camping Jungfrau.

Restaurant Weidstübli at Camping Jungfrau

We were pleasantly surprised to find that Camping Jungfrau had such a delicious on-site restaurant.

In fact, Restaurant Weidstübli is one of the highest-rated (if not THE highest-rated) restaurants directly in the village of Lauterbrunnen.

Restaurant Weidstübli is located right below the waterfall in the heart of Camping Jungfrau.

Depending on the season, you can sit either inside or outside. We visited in late September, and it didn’t look like eating outside was available.

Restaurant Weidstübli offers Swiss classics like fondue, rösti, and raclette, along with pizza and other varied main entrees (plus they have a kids’ menu).

We tried the Lauterbrunnen Rösti and the Älper Macaroni (with applesauce!), and they both were SO GOOD.

We also got take-away pizza one night, which was very convenient to pick up and take over to our bungalow.

I highly recommend making a reservation if you want to eat here. We lucked out, and they were able to squeeze us in without a reservation (barely though), and we saw others get turned away that didn’t have a reservation.

Facilities/Amenities At Camping Jungfrau

Camping Jungfrau offers a lot in terms of facilities and amenities.

Here’s a list of the facilities we took advantage of:

• The on-site restaurant, Restaurant Weidstübli
• The outdoor bar, Weidstübli Bar, for drinks with waterfall views
• The small on-site market (it’s very small but has a few things you might need). The Coop, about a 15-minute walk away, is better for grocery shopping
• The Laundry facilities (the bungalows/cabins don’t have laundry but there is a large shared laundry facility you can use)
• Playground with waterfall views

Additional facilities we didn’t use but would be great for campers:

• Communal kitchen
• Clean showers and bathrooms
• Fireplace Lounge for relaxing and connecting with other campers

Pros & Cons of Camping Jungfrau

PROS:

• SUPER affordable compared to comparable accommodations in Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland (almost half the price!)
• Great mountain views from the front porch of our bungalow
• Situated in a quiet, peaceful location near the base of Stubbach Falls, within a 5-10 minute walk to the village of Lauterbrunnen
• Lots of great facilities on-site, with the restaurant at the top of the list

Cons:

• We were very happy with our bungalow and would book it again. However, the backside, where you access the path to the bungalow, backed up to the back of the restaurant, and there were maintenance vehicles and garbage cans near the area. If you want to stay in the bungalows as we did, I’d recommend asking for a bungalow that isn’t directly next to the restaurant. I don’t think this would be an issue if you were staying in most of the other cabin or hut types.
• The playground is a nice addition for visiting with kids; however, we found the play structure to be far too advanced for even our ambitious 6-year-old, who tackles almost any playground she encounters. The holds were far too tall for a child. I feel like you’d have to be a tween to really be able to climb as intended. This meant that some mornings we walked into Lauterbrunnen to the small, local playground rather than playing at the playground so close to us at Camping Jungfrau, which was a little disappointing.

Places to go near Camping Jungfrau in Lauterbrunnen:

• Car-free village of Mürren (home to the epic Allmendhubel Flower Playground with massive mountain views and the Mürren via Ferrata, which my husband did and LOVED.
• Car-free village of Wengen and then up to Männlichen
• Many more things to do within 30 minutes to 1 hour of public transit or car ride, such as the STUNNING Lake Oeschinen (I highly recommend), the Ballenberg Swiss Open Air Museum (such a great way to learn about true Swiss life), Grindelwald, and more!

COnclusion: Camping Jungfrau Lauterbrunnen Review

Overall, we were SO happy with our stay at Camping Jungfrau, and I’d rate our experience as 4.9/5 stars. It was amazing to find a beautiful, affordable place to stay in the heart of Lauterbrunnen, and we’d definitely stay there again.

We loved being able to take morning walks through the village and the surrounding areas all while being flanked by massive mountains and waterfalls on each side.

I highly recommend booking a stay at Camping Jungfrau in Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland.
