What It’s Like at Kings Beach Miniature Golf at Lake Tahoe

When we were recently in Lake Tahoe, we stumbled upon Kings Beach Miniature Golf, and it was such a lovely surprise.

It’s a vintage miniature golf course from 1957, with much of its original charm and character still intact.

It’s Lake Tahoe’s oldest mini golf course, and I’m always a sucker for visiting ‘the oldest place’ somewhere, and Kings Beach Mini Golf did not disappoint.

I wouldn’t describe myself as a mini-golf person, but Kings Beach Mini Golf looked so cute that we just had to try it out.

This post is to let you in on what to expect when visiting this North Shore Lake Tahoe mini golf course and, of course, show you so many pictures so that you can see just how cute and vintage it is.

Mini Golf at Kings Beach History

Kings Beach Mini Golf first began in 1957 with two brothers from San Francisco who created the course to keep their children busy during their long summers at Lake Tahoe.

These brothers and their families continued to operate the course each summer for 40+ years until 1998, when they sold it to some Tahoe locals who continue to operate the course today.

It’s a family business through and through, and you can tell by how immaculate the space is- the turf is smooth, the gardening beautiful, and everything is very clean.

Many of the quirky, old-school course features are originals that have been carefully maintained throughout the years.

There’s even one that has a little sign on it that says, ‘original structure: vintage 1957’.

Kings Beach Miniature Golf Hours & Location

Location: 8693 N Lake Blvd, Kings Beach, CA 96143

Hours: Kings Beach Mini Golf is usually open for the summer season from Memorial Day (late May) to Labor Day (early September) or longer through October if the weather is nice.

Once open for the season, their opening hours are every day from 10 am to 10 pm, with the last entry at 9:15 pm (I know, they’re open late!).

What The Courses Are Like at Kings Beach Mini Golf

Kings Beach Mini Golf has two 19-hole courses named the Mountain Course and the Lake Course. So, in total, you can play 38 holes.

To me, 38 holes seemed like a massive amount for what seemed like a small space from the street, but they do, in fact, have two courses with 38 holes, all designed super well without feeling crowded.

Tall, beautiful trees provide a lot of shade at Kings Beach Mini Golf

They are located side-by-side, nestled under large pine trees, making it the coziest and most outdoorsy mini golf course I’ve ever been to.

Because of all of the tall trees, there is opportunity for a lot of shade, plus the course has nice chairs and benches throughout for those in your group that may need a break.

Benches and chairs are available throughout each course

No matter the course you choose, you’ll get to play vintage holes with mechanical moving traps, fun ramps, and quirky obstacles (like a functioning slot machine and a roulette wheel on the Mountain Course).

Before your round, you get to choose from 25+ quirky ball options. Our kids opted for a Pokéball and giraffe print.

It’s by far one of the most fun and unique mini golf courses I’ve ever been to. Everyone in our group had a great time, all the way from age 2 to 66.

It was a great way to mix up our activities and to take a break from spending time at the beach or hiking.

On the hole that has a slot machine, your ball actually makes the slot spin, and depending on what pictures the slot machine lands on, you get more or fewer strokes.

One of our kids’ favorite holes was one where you hit the ball into a small waterfall, and the ball gets carried away by the water through a tunnel and then pops out somewhere else. They did it over and over and over and over.

And the very last hole has a feature where if you get a hole-in-one, you get a coupon for a free round of mini-golf.

Our 4-year-old was the only one in the group that was able to get it, and he’s so excited to go back again for another round.

Kings Beach Mini Golf Prices

Regardless of age, everyone pays the same price to play at Kings Beach Mini Golf.

However, they did let our almost 2-year-old golf for free and gave him an adorable, tiny putter that was the perfect size.

  • First Round: $15.00
  • Second Round: $8.00 for 19 holes
  • Super Size Deal (paying for two rounds upfront): $18.00
  • Unlimited Day-Pass: $30.00 (play as many rounds in one day as you want)

Other Lake Tahoe Mini Golf Courses

Although there are other mini golf courses at Lake Tahoe, I highly recommend visiting Kings Beach Miniature Golf.

So many fun balls to choose from!

However, here I’ll still give you a brief rundown of other Lake Tahoe mini golf courses available, including another course on the north shore.

  • Magic Carpet Golf: On the north shore, just a 7-minute drive from Kings Beach Mini Golf.
  • Magic Carpet Golf: On the south shore.
  • Tipsy Putt: On the south Shore, patio bar with mini golf.
  • Heavenly Village Mini Golf: On the south shore, located in The Shops at Heavenly Village.
