What It’s Like Visiting Sand Harbor State Park at Lake Tahoe + What To Know
We recently returned from a few days at Lake Tahoe, and let me tell you what… I now get what all of the hype is about.
If you visit the right beaches at Lake Tahoe, it seriously feels like you’re in the Mediterranean (and I would know, we’ve been to a lot of beaches in the Mediterranean).
The water is so clear and so blue and just absolutely stunning.
And one of the best beaches in Lake Tahoe to get this Mediterranean feel is Sand Harbor Beach, which you’ll find at Sand Harbor State Park.

However, there are some important things to know before planning your trip to Sand Harbor State Park.

Where is Sand Harbor State Park at Lake Tahoe?
Sand Harbor State Park is located on the northeast side (Nevada side) of Lake Tahoe. You can see it on the map above or click here to see it on Google Maps.
The closest towns to Sand Harbor Beach are Incline Village and Kings Beach, which are a 10-minute and 15-minute drive away.
And just 30 minutes from Sand Harbor Beach in opposite directions are the towns of Tahoe City and South Lake Tahoe.
3 Ways To Get To Sand Harbor State Park:
Drive And Arrive With Required Parking Reservations For Sand Harbor State Park
For most people, driving to Sand Harbor is the easiest way to get there, and parking at the provided lot with over 500 spaces.
However, one of the most important things to know when planning your visit to Sand Harbor Beach is that you MUST have parking reservations to access the parking lot, and those reservations can sell out MONTHS in advance.
From May 15th to September 30th, day-use parking reservations are required to enter the state park.
The reservation cost is $10 per car with Nevada plates or $15 per car with out-of-state plates.
The reservation guarantees a parking space up until 10:30 am. If you arrive after 10:30 am you are not guaranteed entry.
At 10:30 am, any remaining spaces become first-come, first-served, although the lot is often just closed because all of the spots were prebooked and sold out.
If you don’t have a parking reservation, you can attempt to access the park later in the day once people have started leaving and spots become available (potentially between 4:00 and 5:00 pm, but not guaranteed).
Reservations can be booked up to 90 days in advance, and it’s highly recommended to book as early as possible.

We visited Sand Harbor State Park on July 20th but booked our parking reservation super far in advance on April 27th (almost 90 days before).
I’m unsure when the passes sold out, but they definitely did. On the day we visited, multiple signs along the road indicated the parking lot was full, and that access would not be granted to those without a pass.
If you’re traveling by car but aren’t able to secure a parking reservation, I recommend considering the free shuttle bus that I talk about next.
Shuttle Bus From Incline Village To Sand Harbor Beach State Park (Alternative Option if Parking is Full)
If you’re hoping to visit Sand Harbor State Park but you’re too late to reserve a parking pass, there are other options!
During the high season, a FREE shuttle bus, called the East Shore Express Shuttle, connects Incline Village to Sand Harbor State Park with four stops each direction.
The pickup locations are the 76 Gas Station, Raley’s Center, Tunnel Creek Parking Lot, and Hidden Beach.
If you want to park at the Tunnel Creek Parking Lot, the cost is about $7 to $8 per hour.
Keep in mind that this lot fills up extremely fast in the summer- by 8:30 to 9:00 am on the weekends and 9:30 to 10:00 am on the weekdays- so arriving early is necessary.
The free shuttle operates from 10 am to 6 pm from late June to early September (when we visited it was from June 22nd to September 6th).
Eastbound rides to Sand Harbor stop at 3 pm; however, westbound rides departing from Sand Harbor operate until 6 pm.
Bike or Walk The East Shore Trail From Incline Village to Sand Harbor
The final way to reach Sand Harbor Beach State Park is the East Shore Trail.
The East Shore Trail is a 3-mile paved trail for walking and cycling connecting Incline Village to Sand Harbor. The trail offers gorgeous views of Lake Tahoe and is overall not a strenuous ride or walk.
A great way to spend the day would be to rent bikes in Incline Village, take the 3-mile path to Sand Harbor, and then hang out at the beach for the afternoon before biking back.
Keep in mind, if you arrive at the state park via the East Shore Trail, you will need to pay a $2 park entrance fee.

Beaches at Sand Harbor State Park Explained
Something I didn’t realize about Sand Harbor Beach is that there are multiple different sections of beach, each with its own style and flavor.
The main beach areas consists of two different coves with sandy beaches (coupled with few hidden nooks) and one long sandy stretch of beach.
The first cove (here on Google Maps) is has a sandy beach surrounded by beautiful boulders and in the center is a motorized boat launch.
You can expect more motorized boat traffic at this cove with jet skis can come up to the shore. However, it’s still a beautiful area.
The second cove (here on Google Maps) is the cove that you’ve most likely seen a ton of photos of and what you most commonly see if you Google ‘Sand Harbor Beach’.
It’s a gorgeous, quiet cove and, in my opinion, the most beautiful area of Sand Harbor Beach.
The beach is hugged by tall pine trees, and beautiful boulders are strewn into the water, which makes it a perfect spot for kids to play.
The day we visited Sand Harbor, we were with a large group that had already set up over on the long stretch of beach (that I’ll talk about next).
However, if it’d been up to us, we definitely would’ve chosen to set up in this stunning cove. I’m a sucker for a small, crystal-clear cove (which you usually have to go to the Mediterranean to find!), and this cove at Sand Harbor Beach is just that.
Finally, the long stretch of sandy beach which you’ll find here on Google Maps.
This area of Sand Harbor Beach is the most ‘typical’ beach of all of the beaches. It’s a long, wide stretch of sand with shallow water and sweeping views of Lake Tahoe.
There is also a lifeguard tower in this section, if that’s important to you.
Since this beach is the largest, it’s the easiest to find a spot on; however, if you arrive in the morning, you can squeeze in any of the coves or beaches.
The kayak and paddleboard rentals are located on the far end of this beach (here).
If you plan to rent kayaks, there’s no need to set up your beach spot near the rental tent. You can just walk over to the rental station to pick up your boat and then paddle back to wherever you are set up for the day.
Kayak & Paddle Board Rentals at Sand Harbor Beach
By far, one of the best things to do at Sand Harbor State Park is to kayak or paddleboard. The stunning, rocky coastline with crystal clear blue and green water is an absolute delight to explore by paddling.
We rented kayaks right on the beach from Clearly Tahoe. They rent all sorts of things like single and tandem kayaks, glass-bottom kayaks, paddleboards, canoes, beach umbrella and chair sets, and more.
During peak season, rentals are generally available from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm (weather permitting), with the last rental at 5:00 pm and all rentals needing to be returned by 6:00 pm.
You can also rent during the off-season but with more limited hours. You can see their seasonal rental calendar here.
The rental tent rents on a first-come-first serve basis, so you don’t need to worry about booking anything ahead of time, and they have so much inventory that I don’t think running out is an issue.
We rented a tandem kayak for 3 hours, and it cost about $100. That may sound expensive, but it was well worth it.
Kayaking from Sand Harbor Beach was the best part of our day and took us to some of the most beautiful areas I’ve ever seen.
Just about a 15-20 minute paddle along the coast from Sand Harbor Beach is Bonsai Rock. Bonsai Rock is a large, famous boulder in a stunning cove surrounded by piles of other gorgeous granite rocks.
There’s a small sandy shore where you can leave your kayaks, and you can swim in the water and jump off boulders. It’s so gorgeous and so much fun. We loved it, and our kids loved it.
It’s literally one of the most beautiful places I’ve visited.
If you don’t want to kayak all the way to Bonsai Rock, there are plenty of other beautiful boulder-filled areas right along the different sections of Sand Harbor Beach.
You can stay nearby and still have an amazing experience kayaking or paddleboarding.

Glass-Bottom Kayaking Tours to Bonsai Rock
As we were kayaking, we saw a few tour groups in glass-bottom kayaks heading to the same area we were. It honestly looked pretty fun.
If you take one of these tours, not only do you get to use a glass-bottom kayak (how cool is that) you also get to learn more about Lake Tahoe and how to protect and preserve this beautiful area.
In some areas, the water is so clear that you can see 65 feet below the surface. Being in a glass-bottom kayak give you so much more visibility than what we had.
Plus, this glass-bottom kayak tour is a great idea if you feel nervous about the idea of renting a kayak on your own but want to visit the same beautiful spots we visited.
The tour guide is with you the whole time and ensures everyone feels safe and taken care of.

Another nice thing about this tour is that you don’t have to worry about securing a parking reservation months in advance because the group meets in Incline Village and shuttles you into Sand Harbor State Park (win-win!).
Live Music and Shakespeare at the Sand Harbor Amphitheater
Sand Harbor State Park is home to a beautiful outdoor amphitheater with stunning Lake Tahoe views.
In July and August, this outdoor amphitheater hosts the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival along with multiple other non-Shakespeare-related concerts, which they call the Showcase Series (which is good to know if you’re not a Shakespeare fan).
Shows and performances typically start around 7:30 PM, and a pop-up kitchen, called Shakespeare’s Kitchen, offers delicious dinners onsite (you can even get wait service if you order the premium seats!).

Sand Harbor Visitor Center, Gift Shop and Kokanee Bar & Grill
All right next to each other at Sand Harbor State Park, you’ll find a small visitor center, a gift shop, and Kokanee Bar & Grill.
Although the gift shop is small, it does have some high-quality locally made items for sale (we got a beautiful Christmas ornament).
And Kokanee Bar & Grill is a great place to grab a burger, fries, pizza, sandwiches or ice cream. You can see their full menu here.
