Is July The Best Time to Visit The Faroe Islands?

This July, instead of heading south to the Mediterranean (which we love) we decided to escape the heat and head north to the Faroe Islands instead (we took a ‘coolcation’ you could say).

The Faroe Islands have unpredictable weather year-round, so we thought that visiting in July might increase our chances of sunny, rain-free days.

This guide is to let you know what our experience was like visiting the Faroe Islands in July and whether taking a trip to the Faroe Islands in the summer is a good choice for you as well.

Is July a Good Time to Visit The Faroe Islands?

Yes! July is one of the best months to visit the Faroe Islands!

PROS OF VISITING THE FAROE ISLANDS IN JULY:

  • One of the ‘warmest’ months in the Faroe Islands (although warm doesn’t exactly mean warm. Temps will still be in the mid-50s F and rain, fog and wind can be a daily occurrence).
  • Long daylight hours to fit in as much exploring as possible
  • If you want to experience local life, July is a great time to visit because the Faroe Islands National Day is celebrated on July 29 with a big celebration in Torshavn
Waterfall falls from a sea cliff into the sea
Mulafossur Waterfall

CONS OF VISITING THE FAROE ISLANDS IN JULY:

  • Higher prices for accommodations (think about booking 7-9 months in advance if you’re looking for a special place)
  • More crowded than May, June or September, however, it didn’t seem all that busy

What is the Weather in The Faroe Islands in July?

You can expect the average high temperatures in July in the Faroe Islands to be in the mid-50s°F and in the high-40s°F at night. Rain, fog (and I mean FOG), and wind can blow through basically at any time and you may feel like you experience 3 different days’ worth of weather in one day.

You may have a few hours of moody fog with rain, followed by the clouds parting and a few hours of blue skies and sunshine. It was nice to get a bit of both during our time in the Faroes.

Drangarnir and Tindhólmer from Bøur Village

My favorite way to research the weather for upcoming trips is to visit Accuweather.com. Input Torshavn, Faroe Islands in the location bar and then select ‘monthly’ in the top bar (you may have to scroll to the right to find the monthly tab if you’re on your phone).

Mulafossur Cottages

This pulls up a calendar to which you can select ‘July’ to show you the expected average high and low temperatures for the upcoming year, but it will also show you the ACTUAL temperatures from the past year.

I find this very helpful in getting an overall picture of what the weather might be like.

Are the Faroe Islands Busy in July?

If you ask a local (like we did) they will tell you that yes, the islands are crowded in July. They notice that the roads are busier, cars are driving more slowly and that there are more people at the grocery stores.

However, from our point of view, it didn’t feel crowded at all.

Klakkur

The only times we felt like there were a lot of tourists in one place was when we were in Saksun and Mulafossur Waterfall.

However, even then, it only felt like there were a lot of tourists because the parking lots are pretty small, so they fill up quickly, which makes it feel more crowded than it really is.

Overall, the islands still felt like an undiscovered gem where we were occasionally experiencing things with other people who were also in on the secret.

Is The Sun Up all night in the Faroes in July?

No, the Faroe Islands do not experience the midnight sun, where the sun never sets; however, they do have extremely long days.

In July, the sun sets quite late and rises very early, giving between 17.5 hours of daylight and 19.5 hours of daylight.

During the longest days/shortest nights in July, the sun can set around 11:15 pm and rise around 2:45 am 🤪 (wild, I know).

What to Wear when Visiting The Faroe Islands in July

As I’ve mentioned, the weather in the Faroe Islands can be cold and unpredictable even in the peak of summer. Always bring layers and be ready to shed or put on more.

WHAT TO PACK FOR THE FAROE ISLANDS:

Most days, I wore hiking boots, wool socks, leggings, a short-sleeve shirt, a fleece, a windbreaker, and a beanie (the wind can be quite cold).

  • Long pants (including rain pants if you really plan to hike a lot and in poor weather)
  • Wool Socks
  • Hiking boots/shoes (some trails can get quite muddy)
  • Both long-sleeve and short-sleeve shirt options

  • Sweaters
  • Rainjacket/windbreaker
  • Beanie
  • Gloves

WHAT TO PACK FOR KIDS IN THE FAROES:

Kids should have the same list as above; however, I highly recommend packing a rain suit and rain boots as well.

The Scandinavian countries (the Faroe Islands included) have perfected the rain suit for kids (and adults, honestly).

You’ll see local kids wearing these rain suits alllll the time during your time in the Faroe Islands (including ours!).

Our kids wore some part of their rain suit (either jacket or pants) every day of our trip to the Faroes.

There was one day in particular that I was SO glad they were in them because they got absolutely COVERED in mud and would have otherwise been soaking wet and cold.

The rain suits will let you feel more confident in letting your kids play however they’d like, knowing they will stay dry and warm. Plus, they get to stay dry and warm!

We live in Denmark and our favorite Scandinavian brand is CeLaVi.

We love CeLaVi rain suits

The CeLaVi rain suits are amazingly waterproof, super comfortable, and come in some extremely cute colors.

The great news is that you can find CeLaVi suits here on Amazon!

They come in both one-piece and two-piece variants and are the perfect top-layer for your kids when exploring the Faroes.

You can even purchase rain pants separately if your kids already have a good rain jacket they like.

Festivals in The Faroe Islands in July

  • Ólavsøka (Faroe Islands National Day): July 28-29 (large event in Tørshavn and (fun fact) locals wear traditional Faroese clothes to the festivities!)
  • PRIDE Festival: July 27 (one day before the national holiday festivities) in Tørshavn
  • G! Music Festival: Usually, mid-July (get info here)

Things to do in the Faroe Islands in the Summer

You can do basically everything the Faroe Islands has to offer if you’re visiting in the summer! Here are a few of our favorite things, but for a more detailed post, click here to read my 5-Day Faroe Islands Itinerary with Hidden Gems.

  • Klakkur Viewpoint Trail. Other popular hikes are the Postman’s Trail, Drangarnir Arch Hike, and Kallur Lighthouse.
  • Learning about spinning wool at Spinnaríið við ánna
  • Vestmanna Sea Cliff Boat Tour
  • Saksun Heritage Farm
  • Fish soup at Fiskastykkid
  • Hot tubbing- the weather is cool enough to enjoy an evening in a hot tub. We stayed at this Airbnb with a great hot tub.

Where to Stay in the Faroes in July

IN A RUSH? LINKS TO OUR ACCOMODATIONS:

😍 Mulafossur Cottages:Absolutely stunning cottages in a remote valley surrounded by epic mountains and a nearby stream for playing. Only a 15-minute walk to Mulafossur Waterfall.

😍 Colorful Boathouse with Hot Tub:Picturesque boathouse situated right on the harbour in Leirvik with a cute wooden hot tub with boat and waterfall views with viking ruins right across the street!

1. Mulafossur Cottages

If you’re looking for beautiful places to stay in the Faroe Islands, look no further than Mulafossur Cottages.

Mulafossur Cottages

We stayed here for half of our time in the Faroes and it was such a peaceful, beautiful experience. I mean, can you really beat staying in a traditional, grass-covered cottage in a remote valley just a 10-minute walk from Mulafossur Waterfall??

There are 1-3 bedroom cottages available (we had a 2-bedroom). I recommend booking a cottage that has a bedroom on the MAIN floor because the ceilings in the bedrooms upstairs are crazy short. Just look at the photos and you’ll be able to tell which ones have a room on the main level.

Be sure to book WAY in advance- we booked our cottages for JULY in DECEMBER and they were already almost booked up!

2. Colorful Boat House (with a Hot TUb!)

I searched long and hard to find accommodations in the Faroe Islands with a hot tub that fit BOTH our family and our budget. We landed on this colorful boat house right on the harbor in Leirvik and it has the cutest, wooden hot tub overlooking the marina.

We loved staying here and relaxed in the hot tub EVERY NIGHT as a family. It was the best way to end the night after a long day of exploring.

OTHER GORGEOUS PLACES TO STAY WITH A HOT TUB IN THE FAROE ISLANDS:

💰 3-Bedroom Cottage Overlooking the Water with Terrace and a Hot Tub: Surprisingly affordable for the size and location

💰💰 3-Bedroom Luxury Wooden Cottage with Grass-Covered Roof with Views and a Hot Tub located on Sandoy: Located on the same island we did the tour of the wool spinnery- one of my favorite islands

💰💰💰 2-Bedroom Grass Covered Home with Amazing Views and a Wooden Hot Tub: You can’t beat this location near Torshavn but located in nature. I’m a little jealous we didn’t get to stay at this beauty

💰💰💰3-Bedroom Wellness Townhouses with Sauna, Jacuzzi & Panoramic Views: If you’re looking for luxury with gorgeous views- this is it!

3. Staying central in/near Torshavn

When booking our accommodations, I didn’t realize how convenient it would be to be based near Torshavn. You’ll read this everywhere, but Torshavn is actually a great central option, and staying near there can help eliminate unnecessary time driving back and forth.

However, just because you’re staying in/near Torshavn, it doesn’t mean you can’t stay somewhere with beautiful views. I was surprised to see how beautiful the area right near Torshavn is!

We haven’t stayed at any of these accommodations, but they look really nice and have a great central location.

💰 Hotel Djurhuus: Located just a 9-minute walk from central Torshavn, breakfast is included and some rooms have a sea view

💰💰 Havgrim Seaside Hotel 1948: is a beautiful boutique hotel situated close to the city center (only a 7-minute walk from restaurants), but situated in a scenic spot on the water with a shared hot tub

💰💰💰 STUNNING Grass-Covered, 2-Bedroom Home with Hot Tub and Views: I’m a little jealous we didn’t have the chance to stay in this beauty, which is only a 10-minute drive from Torshavn.

Other Good Times to Visit The Faroe Islands

According to our local hosts at Mulafossur Cottages, the best months to visit are May to September.

They said chances for good weather are higher during these months, while other months have higher chances of even more volatile weather.

Church of Viðareiði

The con of encountering more volatile weather is that you may have to spend more time than you wish inside your accommodations, and boat trips (that generally only run seasonally, April-October) have even greater chances of being canceled.

However, if you’re going to be stuck inside anywhere, make it be Mulafossur Cottages. We had one day we stayed in because of poor weather, and we still were able to enjoy gorgeous views right from our cottage all day long (it was lovely).

And that’s everything I think you need to know about visiting The Faroe Islands in July! July is definitely one of the best times to visit the Faroe Islands, and I know you’ll have a great time. If you have any questions, let me know in the comments below, and I’ll be sure to get back to you.
