Faroe Islands Trip Cost Breakdown: Is it as Expensive as They Say?
We recently traveled to the Faroe Islands as a family of five with three kids, ages 6, 3, and 1. I knew that the Faroes weren’t going to be the cheapest place we’d ever traveled; however, I was surprised at how expensive some things were (I’m looking at you car rentals ๐).
We didn’t have all the money to spend in the world; however, I did want to make sure we had a great, memorable experience. I was able to find unique, beautiful accommodations within our budget plus we booked a couple of different tours/experiences while in the Faroes that add to the trip cost but are must-dos.

So, I’m going to give you our Faroe Islands trip cost breakdown to give you some insight into how much we paid (not including airfare) to see if the type of trip you’re looking for may cost a similar amount.

Is it Expensive to visit the Faroe Islands?
The Faroe Islands definitely aren’t considered a budget destination. I was most shocked by the rental car cost ( almost 3x more than we usually pay!).
However, we were able to find accommodations on par with what we usually pay on trips (and you could pay even less than we did if you don’t need as much space or if good views or amenities aren’t important to you).

Food is another cost that is just going to be more, no matter what you do. You can save money by not eating out (which restaurants aren’t easy to come by anyways); however, you’ll need to budget 25-35% more than your usual grocery bill in the US for Faroe Islands grocery stores.
There are a few tours/excursions that I think are well worth the cost; however, if you want to save, you could also cut those (more on those below).
Faroe Islands Vacation Cost Breakdown
We spent 9 days and 8 nights in the Faroe Islands, where we stayed at two different accommodations, rented a car, and booked a couple of paid tours/experiences.
We spent 7/9 of those days exploring the Faroes since the first day we arrived and settled in, and the last day we flew out.
If we did it again, I’d cut one night from our itinerary, which would immediately save hundreds of dollars between our accommodations and car rental.
โจ Click here to check out my 5-7 day Faroe Islands Itinerary with our favorite sights and hidden gems!

Below is a quick overview of the cost breakdown; however, I go into more detail further down, including additional ways to cut costs (or splurge!).
Faroe Islands Prices
- Car Rental: $1,450 (about $160 per day WITHOUT full coverage)
- Accommodations: $2,410
- Mulafossur Cottages with a Grass Roof: $288 per night for 2 bedrooms
- Colorful Boathouse with a Hot Tub: $314 per night for 2 bedrooms
- Vestmanna Sea Cliffs Boat Trip: $207 ( adults are $70 each, kids aged 2-13 are $35 each)
- 1-Hour, Private Tour of a Local Wool Spinnery (Spinnarรญiรฐ viรฐ รกnna): $150
- Entrance to Saksun Heritage Farm: $46 (adults are about $23 each, kids aged 0-12 are free)
- Subsea Tunnel Tolls: $120
- Eating Out: We only ate out a few times, but at one restaurant we went to but one entree with no drinks or sides was about $25
- Groceries: Unsure what we spent, but I’d say it’s at least 25% more than what you can expect to pay in the US. So to ‘guesstimate’ your cost, add 25% onto your usual grocery bill.
๐ฐ๐ฐ TOTAL COST FOR 9 DAYS AND 8 NIGHTS FOR A FAMILY OF 5 (without airfare or food):
= $4,383
I will say that I choked a bit when I saw that total amount (I hadn’t added everything up until just now๐ซ ). But that being said, we’d do it again!

Keep reading for a more in-depth explanation of our costs, plus ways to cut or splurge!
๐ฐ ACCOMMODATIONS
8 NIGHTS OF ACCOMMODATIONS: $2,410
- Mulafossur Cottages with a Grass Roof: $288 per night for 2 bedrooms
- Colorful Boathouse with a Hot Tub: $314 per night for 2 bedrooms
The top-most important thing to me about our trip to the Faroe Islands was where we stayed. I wanted to stay somewhere beautiful & unique. I wanted to feel that we were still experiencing the Faroe Islands even when we weren’t out and about.
IN A RUSH? LINKS TO OUR ACCOMODATIONS:
๐ Mulafossur Cottages:Absolutely stunning cottages in a remote valley surrounded by epic mountains and a nearby stream for playing. Only a 15-minute walk to Mulafossur Waterfall.
๐ Colorful Boathouse with Hot Tub:Picturesque boathouse situated right on the harbour in Leirvik with a cute wooden hot tub with boat and waterfall views with viking ruins right across the street!
I get a lot of pride in finding swoon-worthy, yet budget-friendly accommodations and I felt that I was able to do that in the Faroe Islands.
We stayed at two different mid-range, 2-bedroom accommodations for about $300 per night that gave us some of the best memories from our trip to the Faroes!
The first place was this colorful boat house right on the harbor in Leirvik with a super cute wooden hot tub. The accommodations were very modern, clean, and spacious and the hot tub was amazing.
We used the hot tub every night after exploring all day- we all loved it!
The second place we stayed, called Mulafossur Cottages, was an absolute dream. These cottages are the most picturesque, wooden, grass-covered cottages in the middle of a remote, green valley.
Each cottage has large windows with stunning views from the dining table, and there’s even a stream right near the cottage that our kids loved playing in. I was so glad we were staying here on a day that we had to stay mostly in because of poor weather, because we were still able to enjoy gorgeous views from our cottage and relax.
We booked our cottage for our JULY trip in DECEMBER, and they were already almost booked up ๐ฎ. Click here to see if they are still available for your dates.
You can, of course, find less expensive places to stay than where we stayed if you don’t care about views or amenities (like our hot tub); however, I felt our accommodations were fairly priced and generally what we expect to pay as a family of 5.
But if $300 a night sounds like a splurge, I’d say it was well worth it.
If you have more money in your pocket than we did, you can find even more beautiful places to stay in the Faroe Islands, such as this GORGEOUS home RIGHT on the sea with a grass roof and a wooden hot tub with STUNNING views (I would love to stay here).

OTHER GORGEOUS PLACES TO STAY WITH A HOT TUB IN THE FAROE ISLANDS:
๐ฐ 3-Bedroom Cottage Overlooking the Water with Terrace and a Hot Tub: Surprisingly affordable for the size and location
๐ฐ๐ฐ 3-Bedroom Luxury Wooden Cottage with Grass-Covered Roof with Views and a Hot Tub located on Sandoy: Located on the same island we did the tour of the wool spinnery- one of my favorite islands
๐ฐ๐ฐ๐ฐ 2-Bedroom Grass Roof Home with Amazing Views and a Wooden Hot Tub: You canโt beat this location near Torshavn, but located in nature. Iโm a little jealous we didnโt get to stay at this beauty
๐ฐ Car Rental Prices in the Faroe Islands
- 9-DAY CAR RENTAL: $1,450 (about $160 per day WITHOUT full coverage insurance)
Our car rental was by far the biggest surprise cost of our entire trip. By the time I looked into booking it, our flights and accommodations had all been booked, so there was no turning back ๐ฌ.
Our car rental in the Faroe Islands cost us $160 per day WITHOUT full insurance coverage, adding up to $1,450 for our entire trip.
We’ve rented a lot of different cars during our travels in Europe, and this one was by far the most expensive. For comparison, we’ve paid between $25-$30 per day for our last many, many car rentals.
Our only outlier is our MINIVAN (bigger so more expensive) car rental in SWITZERLAND (a notoriously expensive country), and even that was still only about $65 per day!

The Faroe Islands really just smoked everyone by charging us $160 per day for our basic car rental.
Because car rental prices are crazy high in the Faroes, I highly recommend booking through Economybookings.com.
I almost exclusively book our rental cars through Economy Bookings (and as I said, we book rental cars a lot).
When I was booking our car for the Faroes, I searched on multiple booking platforms and even directly with car rental companies, and I STILL found the best price through Economy Bookings.
I was grateful to save any money I could, considering how expensive it was.
If youโve never heard of Economy Bookings, click here to check it out. We use it all of the time.

Another interesting way to save money on a car rental in the Faroe Islands is by booking one of these great Airbnbs that COMES with a nice, new car rental (I know crazy, right?).
This Airbnb host named Sonfinnur rents out multiple apartments that ALL come with a rental car included in the cost (no strings attached)!
I’ve read the reviews, and they are glowing. Any mention of the car states that it was in great working order and that it was so convenient to have the car included with their apartment.
This didn’t work for us because his apartments only host 2-3 people each; however, if that’s you, I’d definitely consider it as a way to save money in the Faroe Islands.
Check out all of his listings that include a free car rental by clicking here and scrolling down to the bottom of his Airbnb profile.
๐ฐ Subsea Tunnel Tolls
- SUBSEA TUNNEL TOLLS: $120
Hello, tunnel tolls, you surprising, potentially expensive cost! Although we are very thankful that the Faroe Islands are all very connected with tunnels (so many tunnels).
There are both tunnels through mountains plus tunnels underwater (which they call subsea tunnels).
Tunnel tolls range from $7.50 to $27 for a one-way passage. The most expensive subsea tunnel is the Eysturoyartunnil (The Eysturoy Tunnel) at $27 one-way or about $55 round-trip.
You can’t do much about the cost of these tunnels; however, you may want to check where your accommodations are in relation to them, because if you have to pay for a round-trip toll on the Eysturoy Tunnel each day, the cost could quickly add up.

There was also one time when we looked at our Google Maps and realized we could take another route through a different, less expensive tunnel than the one we were initially routed through. That’s not often the case; however, in one instance, it was.
There are no booths to pay your toll because a photo of your license plate is taken, and you just pay through your rental car company.
However, if you are visiting with your own car (maybe from a ferry on a road trip through Scandinavia) you will need to pay your toll online within 6 days.
Our rental car company just kept track of all the tolls we owed and billed us at the end of our trip. Easy peasy.
For more information about subsea tunnels, you can click here.
๐ฐ Tour/Excursion Costs in the Faroe Islands
TOURS/EXCURSIONS: $403
- Vestmanna Sea Cliffs Boat Trip: $207 ( adults are $70 each, kids aged 2-13 are $35 each)
- 1-Hour, Private Tour of a Local Wool Spinnery (Spinnarรญiรฐ viรฐ รกnna): $150
- Entrance to Saksun Heritage Farm: $46 (adults are about $23 each, kids aged 0-12 are free)
You could, of course, not take any boat trips or guided tours, etc. in the Faroe Islands; however, I highly recommend booking some.
We booked a Vestmanna Sea Cliffs Boat Trip, where we sailed past beautiful sea cliffs and through towering sea stacks with thousands of sea birds (including puffins) soaring above us (I highly recommend).
Plus, we took a 1-hour private tour of a local wool spinnery that spins Faroese wool (this was by far one of our favorite experiences in the Faroe Islands).
And lastly, we paid for entrance to the Saksun Heritage Farm in Saksun Village.
Saksun Village is a must-see in the Faroe Islands and the renovated buildings at Saksun Heritage Farm are also a must-see.

It’s very small (just a few small buildings), but they are hundreds of years old and recreated in the way people would have lived in them hundreds of years ago. It’s amazing to see how people have lived in this beautiful, remote landscape for hundreds (and thousands back to the Vikings) of years.
If you want to see different tour options in the Faroe Islands, your best bet is to visit guidetofaroeislands.fo.

Most Faroe Island tours have been removed from common tour search engines such as Viator and Get Your Guide and are instead hosted on guidetofaroeislands.fo, which is the Faroe Islands’ own search engine for tours/excursions.
๐๐ Click here to search for tours/excursions in the Faroe Islands!๐๐
It’s also worth noting that multiple hikes in the Faroe Islands require an entrance fee or a local guide.
We didn’t do any hikes that require that, but a popular one is Kallur Lighthouse. You can book a guide separately to Kallur Lighthouse or book a day tour with transportation to Kallur Lighthouse by clicking here.
Another popular hike that requires a guide is Drangarnir Sea Arch. I would have loved to take this 2-hour boat AND hiking tour to Drangarnir Sea Arch. Then you get the best of both worlds by seeing the arch from both the water and the land.
๐ฐ Food Cost in the Faroe Islands
- 25-35% ON TOP OF YOUR USUAL GROCERY BILL FOR GROCERIES IN THE FAROE ISLANDS
I’m unsure how much we spent on groceries; however, I’d suggest that groceries are at least 25% more than you would pay in the US. So, for a good guestimate, add 25-35% onto your usual grocery bill, and that may be similar to what you can expect to pay on your trip to the Faroe Islands.
However, the grocery stores you shop at ARE IMPORTANT! On our first day, we stopped by a small grocery store right in the small village we were staying in ( I don’t know what it was called), and prices were absolutely exorbitant (without us realizing).

The next day, we stopped by the popular, much larger chain called Bonus (it has a large logo of a pig) and got SO much more for our money.
So, the takeaway here is to always search Google Maps for a Bonus grocery store along your route rather than shopping at the random smaller stores.
I recommend packing a picnic lunch for each day you are out and about because, unless you are in Torshavn, restaurants are few and far between.
As far as eating out goes, we ate out at a lovely, local restaurant highly recommended by our hosts (which I also highly recommend) called Fiskastykkiรฐ, and the traditional fish soup without sides or a drink cost about $27.
I think you’ll find similar prices elsewhere (and of course, more expensive at the nicer places you visit).

Hopefully that answers your question:’How expensive is a trip to the Faroe Islands?’. If you have any other questions, be sure to let me know in the comments below. I’ll be sure to get back to you.
