What’s Key Lime Pie anyways?
So what’s the deal with Key Lime Pie? Key Lime Pie is a delicious, creamy pie usually made with Key Lime juice, sweetened condensed milk, and egg yolks (obviously not the healthiest of foods but super tasty). Key Limes which are similar to traditional limes, do vary in taste (usually thought to be less tart) and are usually more yellow than green in color.
Commercial Key Lime growing was found in Florida in the late 1800s and through the 1900s but very little commercial growing of Key Limes exists in Florida today. However, Key Limes are still a staple in residential landscaping. It’s rumored that Key West is the home to the first Key Lime Pie, however, no one is really sure. Either way, you’ll still find the best Key Lime Pie you’ve ever had when you are in Key West and the Florida Keys.

And now, in no particular order, here are my top 8 yummiest places to try Key Lime Pie in Key West (plus a bonus restaurant just one hour north up the beautiful keys). All of these bakeries, restaurants, and cafes have their own unique twist on the pie and their own unique lovely atmospheres.
If you have time, visit as many as you can because when you’re on vacation you can have as many treats as you’d like 😉. And if you’d like to try a taste of Key Lime Pie along with other local favorites, be sure to book a Key West food tour.
1. Key Lime Pie Bakery
The Key Lime Pie Bakery is a very photogenic shop located just one block off Duval Street and right on the path frequented by most cruise ship visitors. Here you’ll find great Key Lime Pie in various forms (whole pies, slices, on a stick, dipped in chocolate) plus other yummy Key Lime snacks to enjoy.
Be sure to hang out, snap a pic and people watch eating your Key Lime Pie on their cute green benches out front! Plus here you can pick up perfect Key Lime concentrate as a gift or for yourself to whip up some Key Lime Pie once you’re back from the Florida Keys.
2. The Cafe (vegan)
Alright all you plant-based eaters and vegans, listen up! You can even try Key Lime Pie in Key West! Check out the only vegan Key Lime Pie in Key West at a cute and chill cafe, aptly called, The Cafe. The Cafe’s motto is ‘Rock the Veg’ however, you can find some meat options on extensive breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner menu for anyone in your group that may not be so keen on the veggie idea.
Not only can you find delicious vegan Key Lime Pie from The Cafe, but you can also try their five other vegan cakes/pies they have available (think Carrot Cake and Red Velvet Cake) and they have some great gluten-free options. Located just 1/2 block off Duval Street, you’re sure to be glad you swung by The Cafe to try some of the best Key Lime Pie in Key West.

3. Kermit’s Key Lime Shoppe (gluten-free options)
Kermit’s Key Lime Shoppe is the quintessential Key Lime Pie experience in Key West. Kermit’s is known to have some of the best Key Lime Pie in the Florida Keys (and where I personally I always went to get my fix). Kermit’s serves up traditional Key Lime Pie with a graham cracker crust and whipped cream topping that you can buy in an entire pie or by the slice. Plus, you can also find Key Lime Pie on a stick (popular in Key West and perfect if you are on-the-go), Key Lime Pie dipped in chocolate and gluten-free Key Lime Pie.
One of the best things about Kermit’s shoppe is the amazing key lime concentrate they have for purchase. The key lime concentrate is super concentrated meaning you only use 1/2 as much as what your recipe calls for and it the the guaranteed way to make amazing Key Lime Pie once you are home from vacation. Not only do you need to buy this concentrate, but it makes perfect gifts for friends and family as well. I brought multiple bottles home with me after my summer in Key West and always loved pulling it out to whip up a Key Lime Pie to feel like I was back in the Florida Keys with no cares in the world.
4. Blue Heaven
Blue Heaven Restaurant is a must-stop destination on your trip with the most picture-perfect Key Lime Pie in the Keys. The pie at Blue Heaven is made with a buttery graham cracker crust and the most meringue you’ve ever seen in your life (we are talking like 6 inches of meringue 😮).
However, Blue Heaven offers so much more than just Key Lime Pie. The main draw of Blue Heaven (which is local favorite) is to have ‘breakfast with the roosters’. And I know what you are thinking, yes, you can top off breakfast with a piece of Key Lime Pie. The quaint outdoor courtyard at Blue Heaven is complete with overhanging trees, cute signage and friendly roosters roaming the grounds. Plus, if you time it right, you’ll be able to enjoy live music while you eat. Reservations are not accepted for breakfast or lunch so I recommend showing up early to guarantee a table outside.

5. Old Town Bakery
Old Town Bakery is a quaint, family-run bakery in a traditional, old-world Key West home. Along with mouthwatering Key Lime Pie, you’ll also find an abundance of delicious pastries, artisan breads, sandwiches and artisanal cheeses.
Swing by Old Town Bakery to pick up a sandwich and slice of Key Lime Pie to-go and enjoy a picnic somewhere on the island (like Fort Zachary Taylor or Mallory Square overlooking the water). However, be sure to visit early as this bakery is only open from 7 am-3 pm each day.

6. Mattheessen’s
When most people think of Mattheessen’s they think of mouthwatering, giant cookies and delicious ice cream. However, this family-run business also serves up delicious Key Lime Pie. Here you can pick up traditional Key Lime Pie or opt for the Key West fav of dipping your slice in dark Belgian chocolate.
Since Mattheessen’s does serve so much more than just Key Lime Pie, this makes a great stop for a large group that is all looking for a different sweet treat. Plus they are open from 8 am-midnight everyday of the year meaning anytime can be Key Lime Pie time 😉.
7. Thai Island
If you are looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of Duval Street for a unique slice of Key Lime Pie, head over to Thai Island. Thai Island is a delicious Thai and sushi restaurant located on Garrison Bight Marina with a second-story patio with lovely marina views. The Key Lime Pie you’ll find here is unique with a yummy, coconut cream sauce drizzled on top.
I spent my birthday at Thai Island and couldn’t have asked for a better experience sitting on the outdoor patio with views of the various boats in the harbor and the warm, summer Key West air around us. They even brought out my Key Lime Pie with a candle to celebrate my birthday.
8. Porky’s Bayside BBQ
Okay, okay, this one isn’t in Key West, but it’s worth the drive up the Florida Keys (plus you can’t leave Key West without experiencing the breathtaking overseas highway anyways). Porky’s Bayside BBQ is located just 1-hour north of Key West in Marathon and here you will find fried Key Lime Pie (yes, fried pie). Porky’s Key Lime Pie is battered and fried then drizzled with lime and raspberry sauce.
I’m not super sure Key Lime Pie needs to be fried, but it’s definitely tasty and worth trying while you’re in the Florida Keys. Plus, along with Key Lime Pie, Porky’s has a nice open-air restaurant located right on a marina with waterfront views. I recommend swinging by for a Key Lime Pie break on your drive on the Overseas Highway.

Kristina Endo
Years (and years) ago, my husband and I purchased key lime pie from a place along that long stretch of Hwy 1 that runs over the water. Instead of the creamy version, it was a see-thru green, kind of like a lemon meringue pie, only green instead of yellow.
I can’t seem to find one anywhere. Can you help ?

Kristina EndoHey Kristina! Unfortunately, I’m not familiar with the specific pie you are looking for. I tried doing a Google Search of restaurants along HWY 1 and wasn’t able to find any pictures that match your description. Best of luck!
