8 Incredible and Budget-Friendly Copenhagen Hotels

So you’re planning a trip to Copenhagen, Denmark and you’re looking for the best Copenhagen Hotels for your trip. As a Denmark resident, we’ve visited Copenhagen seven times in the last two years spending 1-2 nights each trip. Needless to say, I’ve spent countless hours researching the best Copenhagen Hotels and Copenhagen Airbnb rentals.

In an ideal world, I aim to pay no more than $150 per night (after taxes and fees) for our lodging accommodations. Plus I like to stay in places with great reviews, that are incredibly clean and are generally updated. However, in Copenhagen, I quickly realized my pricing expectations needed to be adjusted because lodging in Copenhagen is pricey! No one categorizes Copenhagen as a cheap travel destination, however, that doesn’t mean you should pass it up.

I’m here to let you know everything I’ve learned about Copenhagen lodging over my many trips to the city! Here are my eight, top recommendations for incredible and budget-friendly Copenhagen hotels.

In general, if I find lodging for around $150-$200 a night in Copenhagen, I know that is about the least expensive option I will find. Then, I vet that property to ensure the rooms are not shoeboxes, that reviews are great and that I will find clean and updated accommodations waiting for me. Plus I look for ideal locations, complimentary breakfast and bike rentals in Copenhagen are an amazing added bonus.

Things to know when researching Copenhagen Hotels

  • Lodging in Copenhagen is expensive- use this list to find the nicest, budget-friendly Copenhagen hotels
  • It is difficult to find nice but affordable Airbnbs (many are personal apartments owners rent out when they are on holiday)
  • Some hotel rooms are absolutely tiny
  • Few Copenhagen hotels include complimentary breakfast
  • Hotel parking is most likely an additional cost
  • July and August are the most expensive travel months because of EU school breaks
  • Some hotels offer on-site bike rentals (which I highly recommend taking advantage of in Copenhagen)

Top 8 Budget-Friendly Copenhagen Hotels

*Use the GoogleMap to zoom in and out and view locations of each budget-friendly Copenhagen hotel*

1. Absalon Hotel

  • Located in Copenhagen’s hip Vesterbro District one block from Copenhagen Central Station (København H) and Tivoli Gardens with a beautiful 30-minute walk/10-minute bike ride to Nyhavn
  • Buffet breakfast option
  • Easy, inexpensive bike rentals from the hotel (they even have a bike available with a toddler seat)
  • From 700 DKK / $115 per night

On our latest weekend getaway to Copenhagen, we stayed at Absalon Hotel. Absalon quickly became our favorite place we have stayed in the city so far. The location is amazing located just one block from Copenhagen’s Central Train Station (København H) and Copenhagen’s beautiful amusement park, Tivoli Gardens. Even though the hotel is so close to the train station, we couldn’t hear any station noise (which I have seen complaints of at other hotels).

The main selling points for us were the very fair prices, reasonable room sizes, delicious breakfasts, easy bike rentals, incredibly friendly staff, and super clean rooms. As soon as we walked into the front doors of Absalon Hotel I really felt like I had found the hidden gems of Copenhagen Hotels.

Call me crazy, but this American girl loves a good hotel breakfast, and Absalon Hotel’s breakfast buffet did not disappoint. The buffet included many basics you would expect to see at a hotel’s breakfast buffet including warm options like eggs, omelets, meats, and pancakes but also fruit, veggies, yogurts, and cold cuts. Plus there were vegan alternatives and gluten-free options making this breakfast a great choice for anyone.

I highly recommend taking advantage of Absalon Hotel’s bike rental because Copenhagen is one of the best cities to cycle in in the world. You may feel intimidated at first, but once you see the secluded bike lanes with curb barriers, bike-stoplights, and the incredible amount of people cycling as their main transportation, you’ll want to give it a go. Plus, cycling is faster than walking but you’ll still get to enjoy beautiful city sites instead of traveling underground on the Metro.

Absalon Hotel also has a lovely sitting area (both inside and outside) with various family-friendly board games and a nice bar to buy a drink and relax in the evenings. You definitely won’t be disappointed if you choose to stay at Absalon Hotel during your stay in Copenhagen.

2. Andersen Boutique Hotel

  • Located in Copenhagen’s hip Vesterbro district one block from Copenhagen Central Station (København H) and Tivoli Gardens with a beautiful 30-minute walk/10-minute bike ride to Nyhavn
  • Buffet breakfast option
  • Easy, inexpensive bike rentals from the hotel
  • From 700 DKK / $115 per night

Andersen Boutique Hotel is very similar to the above-mentioned Absalon Hotel because they are sister hotels located across the street from each other. I have not stayed at Andersen Hotel but from what I know, I would say we would have the same great experience staying at Andersen Boutique Hotel as we did at Absalon.

While you’re there, definitely take advantage of their easy and affordable bike rentals to explore Copenhagen.

3. Scandic Palace Hotel

  • Located in but on the edge of the Copenhagen City Center District with a beautiful 20-minute walk/6-minute bike ride to Nyhavn and a 12-minute walk to Copenhagen Central Station (København H) and Tivoli Gardens
  • Complimentary breakfast
  • Bike rentals from the hotel
  • From 1036 DKK / $170 per night

Scandic Palace Hotel is centrally located in a beautiful old building in Copenhagen right near the entrance to Copenhagen’s lovely pedestrian shopping street (Strøget) and very close to Tivoli and Copenhagen Central Station. Even though the building is old, the rooms are modern and clean with great reviews. Scandic Palace Hotel is also one of the few Copenhagen hotels which offer complimentary breakfast.

4. Imperial Hotel

  • Located just a one-minute walk from Copenhagen’s iconic three lakes area (Søerne) and a lovely 30-minute walk/10-minute bike ride to Nyhavn
  • Good for larger families as some room options can accommodate up to four adults and connecting rooms are available
  • Affordable breakfast options available
  • No bike rentals
  • From 890 DKK / $146 per night

Imperial Hotel is located right on the edge of Copenhagen’s beautiful three lakes (Søerne) which are one of the city’s unique defining features. You can rent boats on the lake or just enjoy a nice walk in the area. Plus, you are still only a 30-minute walk or 10-minute bike ride to more central Copenhagen and Nyhavn.

This is a great hotel option for families and groups because it’s one of the few hotels which have rooms that can accommodate up to four people plus you can reserve connecting rooms to stay close to your group. One con may be that some reviews say the rooms are small however that is quite common in Copenhagen.

5. Apēron Apartment Hotel

  • Prime central location by the Round Tower (Rundetaarn) and just a three-minute walk from Copenhagen’s gorgeous Rosenborg Castle (Rosenborg Slot)/The King’s Garden and a short 15-minute walk/5-minute bike ride to Nyhavn
  • One-bedroom apartment-style accommodations with a fully-stocked kitchen and a separate bedroom (great for long stays and for cooking at home)
  • No bike rentals
  • From 1200 DKK / $196 per night

As I mentioned above, it can be very difficult to find nice Airbnbs in Copenhagen for an affordable price. Most (not all) of the budget-friendly Airbnbs I have found are owner-occupied units rented out when the owner is on holiday. In many instances, these units don’t feel as nice as a unit specifically designed for Airbnb. However, Apēron Apartment Hotel is basically a unique ‘hotel’ filled with beautiful Airbnb units that fit the bill perfectly.

Apēron is by far one of the most affordable of Copenhagen hotels if you are looking for a full kitchen, extra space and a separate bedroom. It’s perfect for longer stays, if you want to save money by cooking at home or if you want a little more space for your family. Apēron Apartment Hotel is located in one of my favorite, central areas of Copenhagen with a short walk to almost everything. You are right next to the unique Round Tower, Rosenborg Castle, and Copenhagen’s huge pedestrian shopping street (Strøget).

Unfortunately, Apēron only has one-bedroom units available, but if you are looking for two or three-bedroom units, check out their sister hotel, Rosenborg Apartment Hotel that I talk about below.

6. Rosenborg Apartment Hotel

  • Prime, central location by The Round Tower and just a three-minute walk from Copenhagen’s gorgeous Rosenborg Castle (Rosenborg Slot) and The King’s Garden (Kongens Have) and a short 15-minute walk/5-minute bike ride to Nyhavn
  • Two & three-bedroom apartments (hence the higher price tag) plus a full kitchen and living room
  • No bike rentals
  • From 2199 DKK / $360 per night

The Rosenborg Apartment Hotel is the sister hotel to Apēron Apartment hotel and it offers larger two and three bedroom units that you can’t find at Apēron. It is a great choice for large families and groups that want to stay together and have space to hang out in the evenings. Yes, there is a higher price tag than other hotels on this list, but it is because you will be getting 2-3 bedrooms which is equivalent to booking 2-3 traditional hotel rooms.

Rosenborg Apartment Hotel is located in one of my favorite, central areas of Copenhagen with a short walk to almost everything. You are right next to the unique Round Tower, Rosenborg Castle and Copenhagen’s huge pedestrian shopping street (Strøget).

7. Best Western Plus Airport

  • Perfect for a quick layover or early-morning flight. Located just an easy 10-minute walk to Copenhagen International Airport or a 25-minute Metro ride to Nyhavn in Copenhagen City Center
  • On-site restaurant or two groceries stores next door for inexpensive food options (Netto and Fakta)
  • From 640 DKK / $104 per night

The Best Western Plus Airport hotel is one of the cheapest and closest of Copenhagen hotels to the Copenhagen International Airport. We stayed at this Best Western Plus after flying into Copenhagen very late one evening and needing to be at the airport early in the morning. We walked the 10-minutes to the hotel from the airport around 11:30 pm and felt safe the entire time. It’s not the fanciest of Copenhagen hotels, but it’s definitely one of the best budget-friendly Copenhagen airport hotels where you will find clean rooms and good service.

8. Crowne Plaza Copenhagen Towers

  • A nicer Copenhagen airport option just two Metro stops (10 minutes) away from the airport. An airport shuttle is sometimes available for a small fee or the Metro is right across the street.
  • On-site restaurant but Denmark’s largest shopping mall is next door with a large food court
  • A great option if you are an IHG Rewards member and have points to spend as it is the only IHG hotel in Denmark
  • From 965 DKK / $158 per night

The Copenhagen Crowne Plaza is a beautiful, modern hotel located just a short Metro ride from the airport. It’s definitely a nicer option than the Best Western Plus which is why it’s a little more expensive. The hotel usually has an airport shuttle for a small fee, however, it is also located across the street from the Metro making it very easy to get to and from the airport.

These prices are pretty far off. I just looked and the Absalon is over $350 a night and that’s with the 20% discount for a longer stay…. (this is in the high season, but still)
